Something I’ve been researching and working on very hard this past year has been to restore my gut health.
Outside of taking pre- and probiotics and sipping homemade bone broth, one of the easiest additions to the gut health department has been adding collagen protein to various recipes, one of which I’m sharing today.
When it comes to selecting a brand of collagen to use, the source is of the upmost importance. In other words, you want your supplement to be from pastured-rasied cattle (i.e. the stuff that we used back in the day to make jello treats is not going to cut it).
One company that makes a stellar product is called Vital Proteins. I was lucky enough to be able to try the products pictured here and offer them in a giveaway for you (see the end of this post for entry link):

An easy way to add the peptide version is to a smoothie, in which case you would use the Collagen Peptides version because it’s meant to dissolve easily:
The green container on the Vital Proteins products is the traditional gelatin-type version that gets dissolved into hot liquids and sets up nicely for gummy treats or even as an egg-replacer (I have a hard time remembering which is which, so I put a handy post-it note on top):
Again, the blue-topped Peptide version is meant to be incorporated into foods where it may not necessarily get dissolved by heat. In other words, the Vital Proteins Collage Peptides is an amazing ingredient for green smoothies and adds a nice amount of easily digestible protein.
For today’s post, I made a Peppermint Power Smoothie that is minty and sweet, plus nourishing and healing:
Peppermint Power Smoothie
- Yield: 2
- Category: Smoothie
- 1 ½ medium frozen ripe bananas
- ½ cup frozen blueberries
- 2 large handfuls of greens such as raw spinach, romaine, or microgreens
- ½ cup homemade unsweetened almond milk
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons Vital Proteins collagen peptides
- ½ teaspoon ground ceylon cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon non-alkalized cocoa powder
- ¼ teaspoon peppermint extract, or 10-12 fresh mint leaves
- 1-2 tablespoons raw honey, molasses, or maple syrup
- Combine ingredients in a high-speed blender and process until smooth. Serve cold.
