Dave Asprey of Bulletproof Radio has a new book! As you can see, it’s called Head Strong: The Bulletproof Plan to Activate Untapped Brain Energy to Work Smarter and Think Faster-in Just Two Weeks. I love this title because the research and discussion is all about nourishing ourselves to make our brains work better.
Remember when I wrote a review of Dave’s first book just about two years ago? At that time, I gave his diet a try with not the greatest results. Turns out, my sensitive hormones and metabolic needs require a more balanced amount of macro-nutrients versus the lower-carb, higher-fat approach Dave proposes. Additionally, when I tried a true ketogenic approach, the levels of “bad” bacteria in my system increased, as it turns out that ketones can feed those critters. Whoops.
It’s okay, though, because I learned a lot from that experience and still took away a lot from him about food sensitivities and experimenting with supplements. Dave’s podcast where he interviews the very top experts in health and science is absolutely one of my favs (I included it as one of my Best Health Podcasts for Women) and I learn something from every episode.
Going back to this new book, the emphasis is less specifically on diet as his first book, but more about a whole health approach to reducing brain fog and increasing mental sharpness. Food recommendations are most definitely discussed and I most enjoyed the chapter on “Brain-Inhibiting Foods,” which would include for many people dairy protein, gluten, trans fats, and vegetable oils. Dave’s lifestyle and supplement recommendations represent the best of what science tells us right now, but the conclusions are actually quite simple. For example:
- Looking to get better sleep? Take a walk outside and expose your eyes to the morning or mid-day sunlight. This simple tip can have a huge positive effect on normalizing circadian rhythm.
- Think optimal exercise is spending hours at the gym? New research shows that it might actually be healthier to just take a walk every day and lift heavy weights a few times a week for a short amount of time instead.
Dave discusses the science behind simple recommendations like these, but I love how the conclusions are simple and designed for busy people. Head Strong is no doubt going to be another best-seller. You may or may not care to know all the science behind Dave’s plan, but if you are willing to play around with your current nutrition or lifestyle in order to think more clearly, then I highly recommend reading this book. Don’t forget to check out the other reviews of health books from The Healthy Blogger Book Club, too.
