This healthy Swiss Chard Smoothie is so easy to throw together. It tastes like a fruity, green milkshake!

Swiss chard is a leafy green vegetable that is related to beets and spinach. It is a cool-season crop that is native to the Mediterranean region. Swiss chard can be grown in either temperate or tropical climates.

It is a good source of dietary fiber, vitamin C, vitamin K, and magnesium. Swiss chard can be eaten raw or cooked. It is a popular ingredient in salads, stir-fries, and soups. See this recipe for simple Sautéed Swiss Chard.

And, now I’m showing you how to blend Swiss chard into a creamy smoothie!

Swiss Chard Smoothie Benefits

  • Most conventional smoothies use yogurt as the smoothie base. This usually works well because yogurt is creamy and contains a lot of protein. But, for making a dairy-free smoothie, I like to use hemp seeds and water as the base.
  • The hemp seeds are nutritious and are a nice source of plant-based protein, and they turn very creamy when blended with the water and other ingredients.
  • This smoothie is also great for boosting the immune system, since it is a nice source of vitamin C. Eating lots of green vegetables is also a great way to help support your health.

Swiss chard is a leafy green vegetable that is perfect for using in a smoothie. Don’t have chard on hand? See these best substitutes for Swiss chard.

Hemp seeds are a type of seed that is derived from the hemp plant. Hemp seeds are a good source of protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and dietary fiber. They can be eaten raw or cooked. Hemp seeds are also high in antioxidants.

Nut butter adds flavor and healthy fats to the smoothie. I like using peanut butter, but you can also use almond butter or sunflower seed butter.

Frozen fruit sweetens up the smoothie and makes it thick. I recommend using frozen banana and frozen strawberries. See my blog post on how to freeze bananas for smoothies.

Protein powder helps make this smoothie a meal. You can leave it out if you don’t want to use protein powder. See my lists of the best paleo protein powders or the best protein powder for pregnancy.

Recipe Tips & Substitutions

  • Even if you’re using a high-speed blender, it’s always good practice to layer your ingredients into the blender with the liquids on the bottom. This will help the motor run efficiently, pulling the frozen ingredients and greens into the blades and getting a smooth consistency.
  • Feel free to use whatever nut butter you like. Peanut butter is always my favorite, but almond butter, cashew butter, or pumpkin seed butters are awesome too.
  • I also like to add a couple of dates to this healthy smoothie to help sweeten it up. If you don’t want the sugar, then you can leave them out, or you can feel free to use a couple of teaspoons of raw honey, if you prefer. But, most people will want a little added sweetness with either the dates or honey.

Recipe FAQs

Is Swiss chard high in oxalates?

Yes, swiss chard is high in oxalates. Oxalates are natural chemicals found in plants that can bind to minerals like calcium, magnesium, and potassium. When these minerals are bound to oxalates, they can’t be absorbed by the body. This can lead to deficiencies in these minerals. For this reason, people with kidney stones or other health conditions that affect their ability to absorb minerals should avoid eating high levels of oxalates. However, for most people, the benefits of eating swiss chard outweigh the risks posed by its high oxalate content.

What does Swiss chard taste like?

The leaves have a slightly sweet and tangy taste. When blended into this smoothie, you can’t taste them at all.

What are the different types of Swiss chard?

There are many different types of Swiss chard, including red Swiss chard, white Swiss chard, and rainbow Swiss chard. Each variety has its own unique flavor and color. You can use any type of chard that you can find in this recipe.

Notes

  1. Even if you’re using a high-speed blender, it’s always good practice to layer your ingredients into the blender with the liquids on the bottom. This will help the motor run efficiently, pulling the frozen ingredients and greens into the blades and getting a smooth consistency.
  2. I always recommend using a mixture of fruits in a smoothie, especially pairing fruits with soluble fiber like bananas, mango, and pears, with non-soluble fibrous fruits like berries. This will also help create a nice, creamy consistency to your smoothie.
  3. Feel free to use whatever nut butter you like. Peanut butter is always my favorite, but almond butter, cashew butter, or pumpkin seed butters are awesome too.
  4. I also like to add a couple of dates to this healthy smoothie to help sweeten it up. If you don’t want the sugar, then you can leave them out, or you can feel free to use a couple of teaspoons of raw honey or maple syrup, if you prefer.
  5. You can discard the stems from the Swiss chard, or you can save them and use them in another recipe, like a stir fry.
